Dr. Tabassum Zaman

Tabassum Zaman is an associate professor of English in the Department of English and Humanities at BRAC University. An English graduate from the University of Dhaka, she earned her doctoral degree in Cultural Studies in Asia from the National University of Singapore (NUS). She was a postdoctoral fellow with the Cultural Studies Research Cluster at the Asia Research Institute (ARI). Generally, her research is informed by a conscious choice to use Asia as a reference point to conceptualise from within Asia to contribute to the global knowledge archive. Her first research monograph on Dhaka, scheduled for publication at the end of 2025 by Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, under their Contemporary City Series, aims to do just that. Based on her PhD dissertation, the book takes an interdisciplinary approach to offer a psycho-social reading of the city by exploring popular urban imagination and imaginaries of Dhaka. She has researched and written on Bangladesh’s traffic art, urban nostalgia, graffiti, and wall art, and occasionally contributes to national newspapers. She teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses on cultural studies, urban fiction, modernist and postmodernist literature, and visual and popular culture.
